#4 St.Bartholomew´s Cathedral

Twelve thousand people at the Pilsen Republic Square in January 2015 watched the breathtaking performance of David Dimitri, who, at the opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture 2015, went 240 meters on the rope from the tower of the Franciscan monastery to the St. Bartholomew Cathedral tower.

Points of interest: The Cathedral of St.Bartholomew belongs
to the most amazing Pilsen attractions. Pilsen Sehenswürdigkeiten.

The Cathedral of St.Bartholomew on Republic Square is the most significant Pilsen sight.

The Gothic Cathedral of St. Bartholomew was probably established together with the city around the year 1295. The Tower of St.Bartholomew Cathedral (102,6 meters) is the highest tower in the Czech Republic and it is open for visitors. To climb the Tower is one of the best things to do in Plzen. 301 steep stairs will lead you to the gallery, which is situated in 62 meters above the ground. You can have an amazing view to 72 km far mountains called Šumava on German borders by the nice weather.

The tower is open daily 10 am – 6 pm, the entry fee is 2 EUR for adults and 1 EUR for kids (6-15 years old).

#plzenguide

Many people don´t know that the Cathedral had two towers hundreds years ago. The present tower was built in the second half of 15th century. The first tower was destroyed during the fire in the beginning of 16th century and was never recovered.

The Cathedral of St. Bartholomew is also interesting from another reason: churches were never built on squares in the Middle Ages. The square was usually very crowded place with markets and churches should be quiet place with a cemetery nearby.

The Cathedral is being continuously reconstructed, it received 4 new bells in January 2015, you can see them during your visit of the tower. The interior will go through huge reconstruction between 2017-2020.

#5 The Little Angel

Touch it and whisper a wish. The little angel is placed on small grid at the rear side of the St. Bartholomew´s Cathedral. You will recognize it very easily among others golden angels: the magical one is smaller and lighter as everybody touch it.

The legend about the angel from the church grid, which brings happiness, is from the 18th century: when the executioner married. Because he was not allowed to entry the Cathedral, he was represented by his friend in front of the altar. The executioner was praying during the ceremony outside of the church by the rear altar of St. Bartholomew´s Cathedral. When he stand up he touched one of angels on the grid. And since that time we say that you will be lucky when you touch the little angel.

Pilsen tourists attractions: Little angel belongs to the most visited Plzeň sightseeings.

#6 Three golden fountains on Main Square

When the Pilsen municipality decided to set up three fountains on Republic (Main) Square in 2004, each in one corner (Plague Column is in the fourth corner), majority of citizens were against this idea. The final decision was made when in 2010 Pilsen was chosen to be a European City of Culture in 2015. Fountains represent greyhound, angel and camel from the Pilsen Emblem and were constructed from bronze casting and covered with gold. Officially they were put into operation on July 29, 2010.

Now, these golden fountains belong to the Pilsen attractions and entertain water loving children.

#7 Marian (Plague) Column on Republic Square

St. Mary's plague column with the Baroque replica of Pilsen Madonna on the top is situated in the north-west part of the Main Republic Square and it dates back to 1681. It was commissioned by the Plzeň burgesses as an expression of thanks that, in 1680, the city had been saved from the plague.

The statues on the balustrade and plinth date to 1714 and represent St. Bartholomew, St. Wenceslas, St. Frantisek Xaversky, St. Ruzena, St. Antonin, St. Roch, St. Barbora and St. Florian.

Remains of former city walls you will find in the park between Dřevěná and Zbrojnická streets. The stone wall remembers the time when Pilsen was protected by walls, rivers and water ditches.

Walls protected the City during many wars until the year 1618, when General Mansfeld as a first one successfully conquered Plzeň. Btw., next to the wall is located the famous restaurant U Mansfelda.

Afterwards walls had been destroyed in the 18th century and this 55 meters long and 5 meters tall part is the last one which remains.

The wall painting on the left side is called Theatrum Mundi. The painting was completed in 2001 and shows the most famous Pilsner personalities.

Nowadays this place serves as an open-air theatre for many Pilsen events.

#20 The Egg in front of the Pilsen New Theatre

Probably this is the weirdest Pilsen attraction.

The New Pilsen Theatre was built between 2012-2014. The most interesting part of the New Theater is the concrete facade with irregular oval holes. This significant architectural element, which underlines the artistic character of the building, varies depending on the chosen illumination, which is most noticeable before and after the evening performance.

But what is really strange is the egg in front of the theatre. According the architect it should be a stone covered with mirrors, which attract theatre visitors to stop and have fun. Why we have this 3 meters tall and 20 tons heavy concrete egg will stay a secret. And don´t ask for the price! We could build a new house instead of it.
